        The high stakes of biodiversity

Biodiversity includes all living creatures on our planet. Humans are naturally included, but the growth in our population numbers is leading us to encroach on the natural habitats of other species. The impact of human activities has affected the balance between the various ecosystems. Poaching, deforestation and urban sprawl are all factors which contribute to reducing the diversity and the place of wildlife. What sort of consequences is this imbalance having upon our everyday lives? Why is it so vital that we protect the environment? These are just some of the questions that Dener Giovanini, Johanne Lalumiere and Wangari Maathaï seek to answer here. They demonstrate the consequences of a reduction in biodiversity while at the same time offering simple and realistic solutions aimed at protecting the vitality and richness of Mother Nature.

Eco-housing: the future of urban development

Once side-lined as an ecological issue, the problem of housing has today become a central environmental theme. The housing sector accounts for more than 25% of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. "Environmentally-friendly housing" is an approach to this problem which aims to harmoniously adapt the construction of a building to match its natural environment. This involves improving the energy performance of the buildings concerned, but also focusing on comfort. From Fabrice André's small alpine chalet to Rolph Dish's heliotrope or Jaime Lerner's vision of urban ecology, we quickly learn that the construction sector offers a number of intelligent solutions making it possible to build accommodation while at the same time accepting the principles of sustainable urban development.

        Mali, a delta and men

In West Africa, the river Niger springs in Guinea and runs northwards, towards some of the Earth's hottest deserts. It then winds for several thousand kilometres between dunes and arid plateaux. On arrival in the centre of Mali the river spreads over a surface area as big as Switzerland, creating the Niger delta. Over a million people share the delta's resources. But how can the region's economy be developed without endangering its natural resources? How can the delta's wealth be preserved without affecting the everyday lives of its inhabitants?

Cayar, meeting the challenge of the ocean

Between Dakar and Saint-Louis du Sénégal, Cayar is one of West Africa's greatest small-scale fishing centres. In less than 20 years this village has seen its population increase from 3,000 to 25,000. Thirty years' ago, faced with the looming crisis in fish stocks, village chiefs understood how important it was to implement reasonable fishing practices. These precursors decided to set up a Fishing Committee, a true management body looking at working conditions, administration and the protection of species and the marine environment. From this awareness the Cayar model came into being...

Adrar, the end of the oases?

The Sahara desert covers most of the land in Mauritania. It scarcely ever rains there and water exists only in underground aquifers. For hundreds of years the nomadic populations have used oases to quench their thirst and water their herds. But the great drought of the eighties has changed all this. Faced with the urgency of the situation, local and international aid programmes have been set up: men and women are attempting to bring in new techniques, change behaviours, provide information and persuade people of the scale of the crisis. However, it often proves difficult to talk about sustainable development to people with no resources...
