Eco-housing: the future of urban development

Once side-lined as an ecological issue, the problem of housing has today become a central environmental theme. The housing sector accounts for more than 25% of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. "Environmentally-friendly housing" is an approach to this problem which aims to harmoniously adapt the construction of a building to match its natural environment. This involves improving the energy performance of the buildings concerned, but also focusing on comfort. From Fabrice André's small alpine chalet to Rolph Dish's heliotrope or Jaime Lerner's vision of urban ecology, we quickly learn that the construction sector offers a number of intelligent solutions making it possible to build accommodation while at the same time accepting the principles of sustainable urban development.

The impossible union of capitalism and philanthropy

Can a company be socially responsible and profitable while at the same time respecting the environment? At a time when serious questions are being raised concerning the need to regulate the excesses of a certain kind of capitalism, we tend to forget that regardless of the system it is the people who manage it who are ultimately responsible for its shortcomings. This message has now got across and we are once again seeing human beings being placed at the centre of the economic system. From Bangladesh and the jungles of Amazonia to Paris and Washington, we discover how the solid foundations of a more responsible form of capitalism may be laid. Mohamad Yunus, Tristan Lecomte and Bill Drayton have displayed all the skill and determination needed to try and transform the very bases of the banking system, of international trade and of company management. Here, they explain the true benefits of micro-loans, fair trade and socially-minded entrepreneurship.

Cayar, meeting the challenge of the ocean

Between Dakar and Saint-Louis du Sénégal, Cayar is one of West Africa's greatest small-scale fishing centres. In less than 20 years this village has seen its population increase from 3,000 to 25,000. Thirty years' ago, faced with the looming crisis in fish stocks, village chiefs understood how important it was to implement reasonable fishing practices. These precursors decided to set up a Fishing Committee, a true management body looking at working conditions, administration and the protection of species and the marine environment. From this awareness the Cayar model came into being...

        Cameroun, hope for the forest

Laurent Champonnois shows how defence of the biodiversity in Cameroon forests is being organised, from the felling of trees through to markets for wood in Europe. Several examples are used as an illustration: the Dja wildlife reserve, a vast tropical forest listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, the Pallisco firm which practices managed exploitation of tropical forests in Mindourou and finally the supervisory work done by the Repression and Controls Brigade. This unit, run by the Cameroon Forests Ministry combats poaching and any kind of illegal exploitation in the wood industry.

Over a million people share the delta's resources. But how can the region's economy be developed without endangering its natural resources? How can the delta's wealth be preserved without affecting the everyday lives of its inhabitants?
